Childbirth is amazing, intriguing, and sometimes humorous (c'mon, farts are always funny). Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by the human body, how it works, and ways we can interact with our own body. Books such as Our Bodies Ourselves, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, and Everybody Poops have always been found on my bookshelf.
I hope that each of my clients have a positive labor and birth experience where they understand what is happening at every turn, feel empowered to be active participants throughout the process, and are able to look back on the birth of their child with fond memories and feelings of joy. The way this unfolds looks different for each family and every birth experience. I have had a variety of doula experience including working with a client for 42 straight hours helping her cope through labor without pain medication, encouraging another client to walk through her contractions in order to enter the birth room with just minutes to spare, and supporting a couple as they decided a cesarean birth was the best course of action for their family. Each experience has helped shape and form me into the doula I am today.
I am a certified Birth Doula through DONA International and a trained Postpartum Doula and Childbirth Educator. I have also completed an in depth six month doula internship at Mother Tree Birth where I was able to study under some of the best and most experienced doulas in the city of Portland. I am trained in labor-specific comfort measures, natural coping techniques, and have a deep understanding of the options and medical interventions that may come up in the birth room. I also serve as a backup doula to the Providence Women's Clinic Staff Doulas at Providence Portland Medical Center and have developed a great reputation amongst the medical staff there.
During my time as a doula, I have supported all types of families with a wide range of birth scenarios including unmedicated labors, inductions, single moms, fertility struggles, multicultural families, parents over 40, LGBTQ+ families, premature births, planned cesareans, bilingual households, and many more. I consider myself a life long student and am constantly searching for ways to learn and grow my knowledge in order to continue to support my clients in the best way possible.
I am the 3rd of 7 girls and am one of the few remaining born and raised Oregonians. I live in North Portland with my husband Phil and our two ridiculously cute dogs, Penny and Rosie. Ever since I was young, I have always had a multitude of ways to express my creative impulses. There is usually no less than three sewing projects on my table, a knitting project in my bag, and a wide array of house plants being tended to in my home.
I strive to laugh everyday whether by watching comedy, playing games with my friends, or reading Bossypants or other hilarious books. I have also recently unearthed a deep love for podcasts. So many podcasts, so little time.
